7 Things a Red Cup Tells Me About Starbucks

We’ve all heard the uproar lately about the Starbucks plain red cup. If you haven’t, I have no idea why my blog is your first source of news. Anyway, while I tend to keep my mouth shut on issues like this (ok, that is a lie), I decided to weigh in on what the red cup tells me about Starbucks.

7 Things a Red Cup Tells Me About Starbucks:

  1. They hate the color blue.

  2. They’ve done their research on color psychology. Red makes you want to eat and drink. It also signifies danger – aka the holidays are fast approaching!

  3. Their graphic designer has been beaten over the head with the “less is more” trend in the design world and decided to test its limits.

  4. They’ve been drinking out of one too many red solo cups at parties and decided they wanted in on the fun.

  5. They wanted their cups to better match the bloodshot eyes of their crazed customers.

  6. They secretly wanted to anger some crazy people on the internet who will take their anger out on Starbucks by buying more Starbucks.

  7. That I can really only come up with six half funny cup jokes at 12:15 in the morning.

  1. Love this! I think the red is still cheery and festive 🙂

    • Me too! It’s still red with a green logo. Last I checked that was more festive than their usual cups. 🙂

  2. This is absolutely hilarious! And has “Alex” written all over it lol! Fun twist on the whole red cup debacle 🙂

    • Thanks Christina! 🙂 Probably my most snarky post yet… but you know there is more where that came from.

  3. Haha, this is too funny!

  4. I just love Starbucks, I don’t care about the color. Funny post. Joe @ http://www.mydaddoes.com.

  5. This red cup uproar is insane. Loved this post!

  6. Haha, Your blog IS my first source of this breaking news!!! And now the caption on today’s Skimm makes more sense to me. 🙂 I need to get out more!

  7. Too funny. Who knew such an insignificant thing could cause such an uproar? Oh yeah. People are crazy. And bored.

  8. Honestly the uproar I have heard about is toward the uproar about the cups.:) I haven’t actually witnessed anyone upset about the cups. I mean I know there are looneys out there who are upset, but I haven’t encountered anyone like that yet…yet your blog is the 20th post I have read about it in the last few days.:) HAHAHA.

  9. I didn’t really get all of the red cup craze, I kinda refused to read through it all. After all I am in Germany and it wasn’t an issue here. I read and heard about it over the internet – duh. But I must say, people are crazy and this whole thing is just insane!
    Love your post though!

    • Thanks Chrissy! I honestly didn’t read into it too much, but after seeing it everywhere for days I figured I should have some fun with it 🙂

  10. HAHA all true though! I love the lighthearted approach. (:

    Coming Up Roses

  11. Haha, well said. Your jokes made me laugh.

  12. Way to take a light-hearted spin on this ridiculous controversy. I’m more of a local coffee shop girl myself, but I’ll still be visiting Starbucks if in a bind;)

  13. This list is hilarious! And spot on. 🙂

  14. hahahha too funny! Seriously though, people have no chill. It’s legit a cup. Plus, ombre is still really in right now, so it’s not like it came out of no where.

    • Haha. I know, when I heard the argument the first time I didn’t realize how big it would get… I mean… it’s a red CUP.

  15. Love this post! People take things way out of proportion!! The one about drinking out of too many red solo cups made me laugh!!

  16. Haha! Love this! Thanks for brightening my day!

  17. Hilarious! I’ve found the whole thing to be very entertaining & makes me crave coffee.

  18. The red psychology thing is totally true.
They say that you shouldn’t paint your dining room that color because you will eat more.

    • Same reason almost all fast food restaurants use that as one of their main colors! So strange how the brain works.

  19. I think I missed the whole cup controversy. What is it even about? I don’t like Starbucks coffee so I never go there.

    • Apparently very religious people are offended that the cups this year are only red – which means Starbucks is attacking Christmas by removing winter visuals from their cups… it really doesn’t make any sense.

  20. Omg. I am so glad you were the post above me! This is hysterical. My husband was corporate for 14 years. He will love this and will most certainly send it on. Hysterical.

    • I’m glad you enjoyed it and I hope he does too! I would love for him to share it with others with Starbucks backgrounds lol

  21. DT

Love this!! I love the red cup 🙂 my favorite color. But I didn’t make me want coffee any more or less.

  22. ha! Love!

I’m too cheap to buy Starbucks and can whip up some bulletproof cocoa in my kitchen for much cheaper. 🙂

  23. If there is anything people need to be upset at Starbucks for it’s the prices not the cups. Haha. Great jokes!

  24. Haha, this is good. I thought about writing something on how silly the whole thing is, but I don’t want to give it any more attention right now!

  25. The design team quit when they heard there wouldn’t be any reindeers or snowflakes so the CEO had to design the cup. He promptly raised the wage for all his designers once he realized what they actually did 😉

  26. This is so funny! Much ado about nothing indeed!

  27. OMG,.. I this is hilarious… Thanks for sharing and giving me a smile… My fave was the mention of the solo cup…. 🙂

  28. I’ve heard about the red cup thing, but haven’t really paid much attention to it. As long as the drinks still taste the same I’m good 🙂

  29. I find the red festive and seasonal.

  30. Rae

Everything you wrote may well have been behind the thought process.
Honestly, I probably would never have noticed had their not been kooks getting their panties in a wad over the red cup.

And to think “red cup” used to mean a Solo cup that we all use in summer…

  31. That is great! And so freaking funny too! There are many more things to worry about in the world than the color of a stupid Starbucks cup. I bet Starbucks started the buzz themselves to get media attention. It’s a brilliant plan.

    • Ha, I said that as well! Wasn’t sure if this list or a sarcastic conspiracy theory would have been a better post lol

  32. I think the uproar over the red cups is too funny and probably promoted by a ad exec at Starbucks – not that many people can really care about red cups – right ??!!

  33. Love your take on this “issue.”

  34. LOL Thanks for the giggles! Look out, Christmas is coming!

  35. This was hilarious! I love what you can come up with at 12:15 in the morning!

  36. Love this post, Alexandra! It’s such a ridiculous non-issue, and you’re light-hearted post is perfect 🙂

  37. I still don’t understand why this is even a deal. I love your list though! Thanks for sharing on the #GoodFriendsFriday linky, looking forward to seeing what you share this week!

  38. Hahaha! How did I miss this post!? This is hilarious, Alex. Number 5 was my personal favorite.
